What is acid reflux disease?Acid reflux disease can and often is mistaken for heartburn. But the heartburn symptoms of acid reflux disease usually occur 2 or more days a week for at least 3 months and can damage your esophagus. At the top of your stomach is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which normally opens and closes allowing food to enter. It also prevents the acid in your stomach from backing up into your esophagus. The trouble begins when the LES opens at inappropriate times, allowing acid from the stomach to get into the esophagus, where it doesn't belong.
Acid reflux disease can also lead to more serious medical conditions that may require hospitalization. Acid reflux in the throat can cause sore throat. If acid reaches the mouth, it can dissolve the enamel of the teeth. Millions of people have the disease and suffer from its most common symptom - frequent and persistent heartburn. Acid reflux disease can be treated and controlled. How do you get Acid Reflux?Factors contributing to acid reflux include fatty foods, cigarettes, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, obesity, pregnancy and delayed stomach emptying.
Obesity and pregnancy increase pressures within the abdomen (body trunk), pushing the stomach contents back into the esophagus. Some patients have stomachs that empty their contents into the intestines very slowly. How serious is Acid Reflux? The lining of the esophagus may become ulcerated and can result in narrowing, making swallowing of food and, sometimes, liquids, painful and difficult. In people with esophagitis, there may also be an increased risk of cancer of the esophagus. How long does Acid Reflux last?Acid reflux can last several months or longer if not treated. How is Acid Reflux treated?Antacids are medicines that are commonly used to treat acid-related symptoms, like heartburn or indigestion, and work by neutralizing acid in the stomach. However, they are not usually recommended to treat the frequent heartburn suffered by people with GERD..

Understanding Wine Grapes
You will find that one of the easiest ways to get to know your way around wine flavors is through grape varieties. Each grape variety has specific characteristics. In some regions, one grape variety is used to make a wine; in others, winemakers blend several varieties in a single wine. To help you identify grape varieties, below is an overview of each of the major red grapes and their characteristics.Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is the big daddy of the red wine world. It is like the Chardonnay, as it is widely planted and distributed.
The result of this is that there are so many versions of this grape. Many people think of Cabernet Sauvignon as being a wine that needs to age, but that is only because the best red Bordeaux need age. Most non-premium varieties are ready to go right away.Under ideal conditions, it produces an aromatic, tannic...

Mother's Day Encouragement
As a young mother, author Louise Bergmann DuMont was disheartened every time she encountered the neighborhood Super-Mom. It was obvious that word ?perfect' in no way described her own life and mothering skills. In Faith-Dipped Chocolate: Rich Encouragement to Sweeten Your Day, Louise exposes the sweet bits of wit and wisdom that grew from her personal foibles and failures. Mothers of every age will laugh, cry and take to heart the victories and disappointments Louise shares."Motherhood is like a wonderful roller coaster ride. Even as you hear the clickety-clack of the chains that are taking you to the top of that first hill, you know you're going to scream all the way down the other side.
You aren't the first or the last to sit on that ride. There are others whose hearts race with the thrill and whose stomachs lurch with the discomfort that comes only with motherhood. Is it worth it?
Absolutely. That's why so many of us come back for more!" ~ Louise Bergmann DuMontFaith-Dipped...
Make it a Gainless Holiday
Christmas gain is New Year's pain! Starting early is the secret to avoiding the typical 10-pound holiday season accumulation of fat. (Come now ? you didn't think it was muscle, did you?) Develop a few good habits before Thanksgiving and you're likely to start 2005 weighing no more than you did before, maybe even less. Here are 5 tips that will help you through the holidays.1. Set a mental limit now on the food items that are your biggest temptation. Cookies? Make 2 your limit at every holiday affair. Chocolate? Two pieces will probably satisfy your sweet tooth, especially if you eat them slowly, not in one bite.
If it will make you feel better, remember that dark chocolate has some beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants and magnesium. If eggnog or other alcoholic drink makes you put on pounds, always ask the host for the smallest glass, and nurse it slowly. It will be easier if you tell yourself that it's only until the holidays are over. (By then it might have become a good...

SPEND MORE TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Too often we forgo entertaining because of the mere thought of all of the preparation that is involved. And more is not better. Often we try to out do each other with lavish parties and expensive gifts. Stop and remember for a second what was important from your own childhood. Was it an outing? Baking cookies with your grandmother? Building a snowman with your dad? We need to connect.
This doesn't require more time, just shifting the focus of the time we already have. Here, a casual party and a very simple activity were the catalyst that brought everyone together. To get the entire neighborhood into the Christmas spirit we planned a caroling party. The day before our guests arrived, my kids and I spent an afternoon making decorative candleholders to give to each caroler, to light the way for our caroling expedition. Dad, dressed as Santa, provided our very own photo opportunity. Little ones whispered their Christmas list in Santa's ear.
Grown ups, as well as kids, had their...
